Facility in Batu Ferringhi gets go-ahead after structural damage rectified. A petrol station in Batu Ferringhi which was completed more than a year ago but could not operate because the local council refused to grant it a licence is now set to open
It was mired in controversy earlier as the residents were against the project which due to structural defects, caused underground water to overflow during piling works. Things came to a head last year when exasperated residents wrote to the Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP), calling for urgent repair works by the developer.
Despite the completion of the petrol station, MPPP temporarily suspended the granting of Certificate of Fitness for occupation (OC), subject to the completion of remedial works. The developer had finished rectifying the damage recently to restore normalcy in the neighbourhood as instructed by MPPP.
A check on the site located at the busy Jalan Batu Ferringhi along the bustling night market showed that the spanking new station had been completed with no sign of structural damage. A spokeswoman of MPPP said the piling works had unintentionally damaged the sewerage system beneath a manhole, disrupting the underground water flow.
"The manhole has clogged the drainage, leading to hardships for residents. The inspection team who visited the site concluded that the developer has completed the remedial work," she said.
The spokeswoman added that the OC would be issued early next month. An adjacent fast food outlet would also be allowed to start operations, she added. |
